La legge 180, meglio conosciuta "Legge Basaglia" é passata alla storia come la legge che ha chiuso manicomi in Italia.
11 16 maggio 1978 viene pubblicata dalla Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica il testo della legge 180, datata 13/5/1978 una legge questa per molti versi straordinaria che dettava le norme della riforma psichiatrica. Essa, in effetti, rimase in vigore, come tale sino al dicembre dello stesso anno allorché decadde perché le sue norme essenziali furono inserite, con modificazioni negli art. 33, 34, 35 della legge 833/78, istitutiva del Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, nota come "riforma sanitaria", che regola la sanita italiana, ricomprendendovi, ed era ora, anche la psichiatria.
