Hypertrophic scarring is one of the most significant and frequent burn injury complica- tions. Nowadays silicone dressings represent an effective therapy in their prevention and treatment. Mostly used in gel form, silicone dressings can be used either as pressure- associated or pressureless dressings, depending on the scar characteristics. Several hy- potheses regarding silicone’s active properties have been proposed in the literature and the most relevant seems to be its hydrating ability. Silicone dressings are reported to have low complication rates and do not require suspension therapy. The aim of this arti- cle is to show that silicone dressings are currently one of the first-step therapies to be applied in post-burn hypertrophic scar treatment, due to their proved efficacy on all scar parameters and subjective symptoms, in addition to their low complication rate.
